Sherlock Holmes and the battle over literary rights
“Heirs to the literary rights of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle suffered a setback yesterday when the US Supreme Court refused to hear an “emergency petition” over a leading American crime writer using the characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson in a new book.”

I’m not sure why so many authors want to use famous fictional characters in new stories rather than creating their own. However, once in the public domain, the characters are fair game.
